Education and Educators

Livecode is excellent for students of all ages to learn. It is a great platform for beginner programmers to learn from. Many programmers learn in school C, C++, Python, Perl etc. My first course in programming was C. But Livecode is a better platform to learn from. The student sees instant results that are very motivating. It wets the students whistle so to speak and motivates them to succeed and move forward with their learning of programming. The Integrated Development Environment is easy to learn and the objects save a programmer much time as a C, C++, Python, etc programmer would have to program these object frameworks in their programs. So these objects and wigets now save a programmer a lot of time and the programmer can focus on doing actual programming of the application. So the programmer gets instant results. At work I was able to do a launcher application for my project managers in my spare time. I completed it in 2 hours in my spare time and was able to give a presentation on a finished application that saved people much time and was able to speed up their processes from things that were slowing them down. They were amazed at how fast I was able to put together a useable application. This is what your students can learn from and produce applications that they can think of creatively. This Livecode opens up the creative abilities of your students. Many students since involved with computer games wish to make computers games of their own. They can do it with Livecode.

I am going to link an education link from the Livecode.com website with Cyril's excellent successful students. Also, there is a link to suggested curriculum that was used at Gracemont High School in Edinburgh Scotland that you can download.

There are many schools in Scotland UK using Livecode for their technology courses for their students. They have been setting a huge example for other schools that are looking for successful avenues for their students.

A note Brigham Young University has two humanities courses based on Livecode.  Good information listed here too. https://livecode.byu.edu/

Devin Asay is the developer of these two courses and he also has been working on the documentation for Livecode.com

There is also another University using Livecode but can't remember what school it is. So don't want to put out false information. But I have talked to the educator at that school that has told me of their success with teaching Livecode.

K-12 and Universities are seeing the benefits of using Livecode in their classrooms.  Students can easily download the community edition which is opensource and learn programming in this IDE.

When I hear of other successful schools using Livecode I will post it here for others to benefit from their stories. I am hoping that the NELUG will help teachers and other educators to learn livecode and give a solid base to their learning of Livecode. We will learn from others in this users group.

A good way to learn from others and see what others are programming in common with you is to attend one of the yearly conferences held by Livecode.com. 2021 conference is online and 2022 is going to be in New York. Think about attending. NELUG people may think about the New York conference since it's in our area of the country. Information can be obtained and tickets bought from the Livecode.com website.
